Project Summary

McAvoy was awarded this project based on its demonstrated capability to adhere to tight schedules on previous DfE projects, and deliver a high-quality solution which serves both staff and students. Within 8 weeks, McAvoy successfully delivered a two-storey modular classroom facility.

The offsite solution

McAvoy efficiently manufactured 42 SmartClass modules at its 70,000sqft, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, with a signification proportion of the work being completed offsite. All 42 modules were installed over the course of 5 days.

The SmartClass facility, comprising 6 classrooms, 2 offices, shower & changing rooms and WC’s on the ground floor, along with an additional 8 classrooms and 3 offices on the second floor, was designed to meet the educational needs of the students.

Harnessing sustainability

The temporary facility’s design includes systems which reduce energy consumption and minimise the building’s environmental footprint. Notably, a highly efficient split heating and cooling system equipped with advanced technology ensures optimal power usage based on desired temperature settings. Furthermore, the use of LED lighting significantly reduces energy usage throughout the day.

Comprehensive site works

McAvoy undertook comprehensive site works, including the creation of safe pathways to connect the new facility to the main school, ensuring the safety and convenience of both students and staff.

Project challenges

Navigating the challenges posed by the school’s location within a residential area with narrow streets, McAvoy implemented a robust traffic control system to facilitate the swift and disruption-free installation of the modules. As the site was within the grounds of the existing school, McAvoy created a separate site entrance to further minimise disruption.

Given the urgency stemming from the closure due to RAAC detection, McAvoy’s expedited manufacturing and installation process, completed within 5 days, paved the way for the timely execution of the entire project.
